ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

A BIG THANKYOU!

COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT THE 75 WONDERFUL ST GEORGIANS WHO VOLUNTEERED THEIR BRAIN POWER

(OR SAID YES WHEN I ASKED...)

RAW EXPERIMENTAL DATA...

AND WHEN I SAY RAW... I MEAN R.A.W.

By the way... all names have been removed due to protect the privacy (or save the embarassment) of volunteers :)

a peek at the results :D

HMMM.... not as sucessful as hoped but the fact that black had a lower average is interesting...

NOTE: Other previously unmentioned changes...

I realised that the colours ORANGE and YELLOW were too closely related especially on a screen...
(see what I mean?!)

and therefore decided to ELIMINATE ORANGE.

Other change I havent mentioned on my blog is the use of a CONSTANT VARIABLE where the letters and numbers shall appear in the colour...
BLACK (only this font will make it appear greyish on my blog but MOVING ALONG...)

I believe these changes have made my experiment FAR more valid :)

THE SECONDS HAVE BEEN REDUCED TO 16 SECS.
THAT IS... ABOUT 2 SECS PER QUESTION...

HEADS DOWN!

I am currently working on the slides which will be created through
                   POWERPOINT

HMM... I am also wondering wether or not using random numbers/letters instead of the same set would be better... would this make it a fairer test?

METHOD

A female year 10 student was seated in a comfortable upright position. A prepared slide of eight red letters was shown. The subject was given 30 seconds to memorise the letters. The subject wrote down eight letters. The accuracy was recorded as a percentage. A prepared slide of eight red numbers was shown. The subject was given 30 seconds to memorise the numbers. The subject wrote down eight numbers. The accuracy was recorded as a percentage.The experiment was repeated with another fourteen female year 10 students (fifteen altogether). This entire process was then repeated with five more lots of fifteen students (all female and in year 10). With each group, a different colour was used – orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Averages were then recorded.

INDEPENDENT:
* the DIFFERENT numbers and letters
* the DIFFERENT colours

DEPENDENT:

* how much data can be retained

CONTROL:
* gender: FEMALE
* age group: YEAR 10
* environment(will be kept similar)
* flash cards will be reused

ideas for method...

There will be SIX COLOURS:
  •  red
  • orange
  • yellow
  • green
  • blue
  • purple
The person will be shown a flashcard with a series of NINE DIGITS
and another with a series of NINE LETTERS
and another with a series of FIVE WORDS

Of course all the flash cards in its type will be the same though the characters shall be printed with different coloured ink.

I will probably set a time limit for the viewing of each flash card.

FIGURES
I will try and get 15 per colour... so that's 90 people altogether.
I CAN DO IT.

FINDINGS...

After reading many articles I have discovered that in some experiments involving colour and memory:

A. colour doesn't affect retention of words
B. coloured images are easier to remember than black and white images
C. data in warm colours are remembered more easily than that in cool colours...

HMMMM... these were the most common results in similar experiments.

CHANGE.

I have decided to change my topic due to it's invalidity...
COLOURS AND MEMORY.

Can different colours affect how well you remember words or numbers?
Could this be the solution to making the best summary for tests?

LOOKING INTO THE CRITERIA /O_O\

1. is reliable ~TICK
i will talk to ms zhang to see if there are any further adjustments needed but for now i'm quite satisfied.

2. will be conducted fairly
the CONTROL of my experient does not need to be too strict as i am investegating a large group of people. AGE and ENVIRONMENT (where experiment is conducted) is quite adequate.

3. can be completed within the time frame
it think the 5 months will be reasonable for me to complete the experiment as i will be required to observe a decent number of people.

4. can be conducted at home using normal household equipment
i own (well dad does, but he doesnt mind)the required equipment

5. can give you a VALID and conclusive result.
i plan to observe a large number of participants (at least 50) allowing a valid conclusion. my conclusion will be the rate of blood pressure increase/decrease/dialation when a person is imagining the senario. it will be helpful in the future so we can all know how to lower our blood pressure to help us fall asleep or STAY CALM! before tests :)

VARIABLES.

INDEPENDENT:
* the DIFFERENT stimuli that triggers an emotional and resulting blood pressure change.

DEPENDENT:
* blood pressure patterns

CONTROLL:
* age group
* environment(will be kept similar)

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?

I AM GOING TOO...

Observe changes in blood pressure patterns of adolescents in different mental states. With the person sitting in a comfortable position i will begin to read to the person a prepared script of a certain senario. this script will be designed to make the listener feel: anger/fear/axiety or joy/love/pride. i will be recording the blood pressure before, during, striaght after, 5mins after these "sessions"

my aim in this experiment is to observe different mental states of the adolescent in response to different senarios and the mental state it puts the person in.

BOOK WORM-ING ;D

I HAVE BEEN HIGHLY ENLIGHTENED AFTER AN INTESIVE SESSION OF GOOGLING.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE ARTICLES I'VE READ...

Blood pressure lowering in patients

&
Blood Pressure, Sleep And Mental Health Improve With Flexible Working Arrangements

&
Lonliness leads to High Blood Pressure ...
http://www.mentalhelp.net/poc/view_index.php?idx=119&d=1&w=1&e=28461

It goes to show that THE MENTAL STATE DOES INDEED AFFECT BLOOD PRESSURE.

what's different about my experiment is that i shall be abserving such effects on ADOLESCENTS.

A CHANGE OF HEART...

STOP. REWIND. PLAY.

I AM VARIATING MY EXPERIMENT...

Many people these days suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension. One of the causes for this lifestyle disease is STRESS.
I STRESS. YOU STRESS. MS ZHANG STRESSES.
A sadly we might all end up having to take terrible medication on a daily basis because of this (like my dad does...). SO...

Think about the EVIDENT LINKS between THE MENTAL STATE and BLOOD PRESSURE.

the difference between blood pressure and heart rate...

THERE'S A DIFFERENCE... AND SO...

i shall be measuring blood pressure because dad has those blood pressure monitor thingos... YAY! i'm getting somewhere ;D

I HAVE AN IDEA :D

I LOVE MUSIC.

"so why not do an experiment on it?" i thought...
HERE'S THE PLAN SO FAR...
i can measure the heart rate of teenagers before/during/after exposed to different types of music~ i'll could also be recording tempo, volume, meter and so on... to see there's something there too!

think. think. think.

I have taken a look at the science fair projects website (http://www.all-science-fair-projects.com/index.php) and realised my previous experiment idea was ELEMENTARY LEVEL. sighhhhhhh...

I thought i had come up with a BRILLIANT idea but apparently not.
It was going to be about the effects of microwaving seeds before planting them...
